Zweiteiliger Film über die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung der DDR auf dem Lande in den Jahren 1945-53. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Tochter eines ehemaligen Gutsherrn und ihr Ziehvater, der "Krumme Anton", der früher als Knecht auf dem Hof arbeitete. Das umfassende Thema wird von der weit ausholenden Dorfballade trotz guter Darsteller inszenatorisch nicht immer bewältigt; neben vielen menschlich packenden Szenen stehen auch konstruierte und psychologisch wenig glaubhafte Handlungsmomente. Politisch ist der Film von Interesse, weil er sich ganz dem Aufbau eines sozialistischen Vaterlandes verschrieben hat: Überzeugte Funktionäre richten die Kleinmütigen auf, und wenn am Ende ein sowjetischer Mähdrescher die Ernte einfährt, ist nicht nur das Plansoll erfüllt, sondern auch der Sinn für eine Zusammenlegung der Felder-/Produktionseinheiten gestiftet. Zudem einer der wenigen DEFA-Filme, in denen der Volksaufstand des 17. Juni 1953 thematisiert und durchaus kritisch mit SED-Parteientscheidungen umgegangen wird. (Lexikon des internationalen Films)
