Unterhaltung wurde in Deutschland bereits seit der Aufklärung als Gegenteil von Bildung und Kultur und damit als minderwertig angesehen. Auch in der DDR verlangte das Regime von den Medien politische - und systemkonforme - Bildung statt purer Unterhaltung. Wolfgang Mühl-Benninghaus beschreibt in seiner ostdeutschen Mediengeschichte das Ringen zwischen Staat, Kulturschaffenden und Konsumenten. Zwar versuchten Funktionäre, Form und Inhalt der Angebote in Funk, Fernsehen und Theater zu diktieren. Es zeigt sich jedoch, dass dies misslang. Auch die Unterhaltung in der DDR blieb subjektiv und eigensinnig, denn insbesondere die jungen Generationen ließen sich ihren Geschmack nicht vorschreiben. Unterhaltung diente letztlich auch im Arbeiter- und Bauernstaat vornehmlich der Entspannung. Das Buch ist „eine gut lesbare, kenntnisreiche und fast immer nachvollziehbar argumentierende tour d'horizon der Konzepte und Vorstellungen von Unterhaltung in den audiovisuellen Medien der DDR gelungen ist. Kenner der DDR-Mediengeschichte werden die Ergebnisse in ihren Grundzügen zwar nicht überraschen, aber im Detail hält das Buch auch für Insider viele Entdeckungen bereit“ (sehepunkte.de)
