In der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts zählte die Kopenhagener Akademie zu den modernsten in Europa. Caspar David Friedrich, Georg Friedrich Kersting, auch der Norweger Johan Christian Clausen Dahl und andere haben in Kopenhagen studiert. Die Blütezeit der dänischen Malerei verbindet sich wesentlich mit der Lehrzeit von Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. Seinen Schülern an der Akademie empfahl er sowohl ein genaues Naturstudium als auch die strikte Beachtung meteorologischer und perspektivischer Fragen. Die zunehmenden nationalen Bestrebungen mit ihrer Hochschätzung heimischer Motive begründeten dann ein neues Kapitel der dänischen Malerei. Der Katalog widmet sich in Wort und Bild dem Aufbruch um 1800, den später in Dresden ansässigen Schülern Friedrich und Dahl, den Arbeiten von Eckersberg und seinen Schülern, insbesondere den Seestücken sowie den patriotischen Landschaften und Figurenstudien.
