Im Jahre 1810 hielt F. W. J. Schelling in Stuttgart vor einem kleinen Kreis hoher Staatsbeamter private Vorlesungen. Juristen, Ärzte und Literaten versammelten sich hier zum ›philosophischen Gespräch‹, um die Prinzipien des Schelling’schen Systems kennenzulernen und zu diskutieren. War Schelling Pantheist? Oder: Ließ sich die stufenweise Entfaltung der Natur mit dem Gang menschlicher Entwicklung in Pestalozzis Erziehungslehre zusammenbringen? Und: Wie stand es mit der Religion? – so fragte der prominente Veranstalter des Vorlesungszyklus, der württembergische Oberjustizrat E. F. von Georgii, in seinen Briefen an den Philosophen. In den »Stuttgarter Privatvorlesungen« legt Schelling einen klargegliederten Systementwurf vor, der aufgrund seiner Stringenz einen umfassenden und konzentrierten Überblick auf das breite Themenspektrum seines Denkens ermöglicht. Gott – Natur – Mensch bilden die metaphysischen Grundbegriffe des Systems, die hier mit Bezug auf Schellings Identitätsphilosophie (1801–1808) und zugleich über sie hinaus entfaltet werden. Nur ein Jahr nach der wirkungsmächtigen »Freiheitsschrift « (1809) und fast zeitgleich mit der Aufnahme der Arbeit an den »Weltaltern« (1811–1815) verfasst, nimmt der Text eine Schlüsselfunktion im Gesamtwerk des Philosophen ein, in dem sich 1810 der Übergang zu Schellings geschichtlicher Philosophie vorzeichnet. Der erst aus dem Nachlass von Schellings Sohn in den »Sämmtlichen Werken« herausgegebene Text wird hier zusammen mit der von Georgii angefertigten Nachschrift in einer Studienausgabe präsentiert und durch den Briefwechsel zwischen dem Philosophen und dem Juristen ergänzt.
