Es gibt wenige Vogelgruppen, die den Betrachter so beeindrucken wie die flugunfähigen, unter extremen Bedingungen lebenden Pinguine. Wo immer sie in Zoologischen Gärten gezeigt werden, sind sie vor allem durch ihren so menschenähnlichen aufrechten Gang ein Anziehungspunkt. Dieser Faszination stand aber bisher wenig genaues Wissen über das soziale Verhalten und die ökologischen Anpassungen entgegen. Die wenige Literatur war weit verstreut und auch dem Fachmann nur schwer zugänglich. Die intensive Erforschung der Antarktis und auch der Subantarktis in den letzten 15 Jahren brachte wesentlich neue Erkenntnisse über die Pinguine und das gesamte Ökosystem, dem sie angehören. Auf mehreren Expeditionen in verschiedene Gegenden der Antarktis untersuchten die Verfasser vornehmlich Adéliepinguine, aber auch Esels-, Zügel- und Kaiserpinguine. Im Vordergrund ihrer Forschung standen Beobachtungen und Feldversuche über die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Pinguinen und ihren Raubfeinden (Skuas und Seeleoparden). Hier geben sie eine Zusammenfassung unseres heutigen Wissens über das Leben der Pinguine, darin eingeflochten die Betrachtung der ökologischen Bedingungen, unter denen Pinguine leben. Bei der Beschreibung der Verhaltensweisen wird besonders deutlich, wie sich diese als Anpassungen an die Umweltbedingungen herausgebildet haben.
