Im späten Mittelalter befand sich der Adel unter steigendem Veränderungsdruck: Durch Kriege, Konjunkturen, neue Vorstellungen und soziale Gruppen wurde der Adel als Herrschaftsklasse kritisch hinterfragt. Der Humanismus schließlich bot Anlass zu dem Gedanken, dass der Geburtsadel dem 'Geistesadel' der Gelehrten unterlegen war. Während der Adel selbst die Möglichkeit gelehrter Bildung zunächst ausschloss, ersetzten nichtadlige Gelehrte Mitglieder adliger Familien in deren Aufgaben und betonten so die Chance eines gesellschaftlichen Aufstieges durch Bildung. Fanny Münnich zeigt am Beispiel des sächsischen Niederadels das wandelnde Bildungsverhältnis und zeichnet den Studienalltag der ersten adligen Studierenden an den Universitäten und ihre spätere Lebenswege nach. Sie untersucht das Bildungsverhalten des Adels unter dem Kontext der Aufrechterhaltung des gesellschaftlichen Status und stellt dar, wie sich die Mitglieder des sächsischen Adels an die veränderten Vorstellungen anpassten.
