Se ofrece en este volumen la edición dos obras del jesuita José de Tamayo y Velarde (1601-1685), cautivo en Argel y Tetuán durante quince meses (entre marzo de 1644 y julio de 1645), cuyas vicisitudes relata en sus Memorias del cautiverio. Se edita igualmente el texto titulado Costumbres, ritos y gobiernos de Berbería, interesante panorama de los reinos norteafricanos a partir de materiales, noticias y sucesos recogidos por el autor durante su cautividad. La esmerada edición de ambas obras, a cargo de Felipe Maíllo Salgado, a partir de sendos manuscritos conservados en la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Salamanca, está precedida de una introducción, en la que ofrece una semblanza del autor y análisis de las obras editadas en el contexto de los reinos norteafricanos coetáneos.
