Die beiden irakischen Dichter Badr Shakir as-Sayyab und Nazik al-Malaika haben die vierzehn Jahrhunderte währende Starrheit der arabischen Lyrik aufgebrochen. Sie machten sich weitgehend frei vom Zwang zum Metrum und zum Reim. Das Gedicht wurde zu einer thematischen Einheit, früher galt die Einheit des Verses. Diese Erneuerung Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges, gilt als Entstehungsdatum der modernen arabischen Lyrik. Die neuen lyrischen Kriterien fanden schnell grosse Verbreitung in der gesamten arabischen Welt. Seitdem durchlief die irakische Lyrik viele Veränderungen. Eine Generation nach der anderen fügte das Ihrige hinzu. Diese Auswahl bietet repräsentative Beispiele der besten irakischen Dichter von der Zeit der beiden Erneuerer as-Sayyab und al-Malaika bis heute.
