Der britische Militär-Schriftsteller hatte die Idee, dreißig ausländische Soldaten und Militärexperten - unter ihnen auch neun deutsche Offiziere - ein Buch über die sowjetische Armee schreiben zu lassen. Das Werk gehört zu dem Besten, was bisher über die sowjetische Armee erschienen ist, und widerlegt den alten Spruch, daß es über Rußland kein Wissen, sondern nur verschiedene Grade der Unwissenheit gibt. Hier entwirft ein Massenaufgebot der kenntnisreichsten Rußland-Experten westlicher Armeen ein vielgestaltiges Bild von dem Aufbau und dem Charakter der sowjetischen Streitkräfte, wie es der Herausgeber Liddell Hart nennt: "Ein Bild so verblüffender Kontraste, daß es schwerfällt, eine zusammenfassende richtige Beurteilung zu finden".
