Note:
Als die Allierten Truppen 1941 die Normandie erobern, verteidigen nur fünf deutsche Panzer die Kleinstadt Carenton. Vier werden von den Invasoren vernichtet, im Fünften überlebt die Besatzung und hofft, dass die Amerikaner sie nicht bemerken. Im Befreiungstaumel erfüllt sich die Hoffnung der Deutschen, die im Schutz der Nacht ihren Panzer reparieren. Hunter, der deutsche Kommandant, ist entschlossen, den Kampf um jeden Preis fortzusetzen. Er ist so verblendet, daß er sein Leben und das der Untergebenen opfern will. Als die allierte Vorhut Carenton wieder verlassen hat, rücken die Deutschen vor. In "Pierres Restaurant" wollen sie Verpflegung erbeuten. Hunter verliebt sich Jeanette, die Tochter des Wirts. Als die Deutschen wieder aufbrechen wollen, nehmen sie Jeanette mit, denn sie befürchtet, wegen ihrer Liebe zu dem Panzerkommandanten als Kollaborateurin von ihren Landsleuten verfolgt zu werden. Im Morgengrauen rumpelt der letzte deutsche Panzer hinter den amerikanischen Eroberern zur Front. In dem stählernen Sarg wachsen die Spannungen zwischen den Soldaten und ihrem Vorgesetzten, der immer noch den Helden spielen will.
