Mahlers Lied von der Erde ist ein sinfonischer Liederzyklus, der heute als eine seiner bedeutendsten Kompositionen gilt. In ihm wird das Leben in seinen verschiedenen Aspekten und der Abschied von ihm (in chinesischen Texten in der Übersetzung von Hans Bethge) dargestellt. Das eigentlich für Alt- und Tenorsolo mit großem Orchester konzipierte Werk wird hier erstmals von einem einzigen Sänger als Solist in beiden Partien gesungen, und zwar von Jonas Kaufmann, dem es gelingt, den Spannungsbogen von Anfang bis Ende zu halten. Begleitet wird er von den Wiener Philharmonikern unter der Leitung von Jonathan Nott. Die Liedtexte sind im Beiheft abgedruckt. Jonas Kaufmann gilt momentan als einer der größten Sänger. Hier meldet er sich nach einer Zwangspause wegen einer Stimmbanderkrankung eindrucksvoll zurück.
