Klaus-Rüdiger Mai erzählt auf der Grundlage intensiver Quellenrecherchen die Geschichte des Protests Leipziger Studenten gegen die Stalinisierung Ostdeutschlands und bettet ihre Schicksale ein in die Unterdrückung demokratischer Anfänge in der SBZ und der DDR von 1945 bis zum Volksaufstand vom 17. Juni 1953. Im Mittelpunkt steht eine Gruppe junger, lebenslustiger und engagierter Menschen um den 20-jährigen Herbert Belter, deren Hoffnungen auf einen echten Aufbruch nach Kriegsende enttäuscht wurden und die sich mit dem Abgleiten ihres neuen Landes in die Diktatur nicht abfinden wollen. Schnell geraten sie wegen harmloser Aktivitäten ins Visier von deutscher und sowjetischer Staatssicherheit. Herbert Belter wird zum Tod verurteilt und 1951 in Moskau hingerichtet, viele andere verschwinden für Jahre im Gefängnis oder in Lagern. Mais Buch macht klar: Herbert Belter, Werner Gumpel, Siegfried Jenkner oder Karl Miertschischk waren keine Einzelfälle, ebenso wenig wie Wolfgang Natonek, Jutta Erbstößer, Werner Ihmels und Luise Langendorf. Die Geschichte vieler, vor allem junger Menschen, die sich überall in Ostdeutschland von Rostock bis Jena für den demokratischen Neuanfang nach 1945 engagierten und dafür mit langen Haftstrafen oder dem Leben bezahlte, sollte viel mehr Teil unserer gemeinsamen historischen Erinnerung sein.
