Der Zerfall der UdSSR hat besonders im Süden der GUS eine Reihe ethnischer Konflikte mit sich gebracht, die die Sicherheit Rußlands bzw. seine Interessen beeinträchtigen. Die Verfasserin erörtert kurz Ursachen und Entstehung des "ethnischen Nationalismus" seit den 80er Jahren und setzt sich im folgenden mit den einzelnen Konfliktregionen und der Rolle Rußlands daselbst auseinander, das insbesondere die Funktion der Vermittlertätigkeit zwischen den Fronten wahrnimmt. Es geht hier um den armenisch-azerbajdzanischen Konflikt und Nagornij Karabach, den grusinisch-abchasischen Konflikt sowie um den Bürgerkrieg in Tadzikistan. Fraglich ist der Nutzen der militärischen Präsenz Rußlands in den einzelnen Gebieten; Gefahren und negative Begleiterscheinungen der russischen Einmischung werden daher abschließend diskutiert.
