Erich Mendel war von 1922 bis 1939 Kantor der Jüdischen Gemeinde Bochum. Er pflegte die große Tradition jüdisch-liturgischer Musik des 19. Jahrhunderts. Bereits als Student legte er eine Sammlung jüdischer Musik an. Sein Hauptinteresse galt der gottesdienstlichen Musik, die für ihn die aktive Beteiligung der Gemeinde einschloss. 1941 in die USA emigriert, begann Erich Mendel, der sich fortan Eric Mandell nannte, eine neue Karriere als Kantor und Lehrer für synagogale Musik in Philadelphia. Hier baute er eine der drei weltweit größten Sammlungen jüdischer Musik auf. Das Buch ist ein Versuch, Leben und Werk des Kantors, Lehrers und Sammlers nachzuzeichnen. Im ersten Teil findet sich eine Auswahl seiner eigenen Texte. Der zweite Teil bringt eine auf persönlichen Gesprächen mit Mandell basierende Studie der amerikanischen Kantorin Ronna Honigman über Leben und Werk des deutsch-amerikanischen Kantors. Ein dritter Teil umfasst dessen eigene Kompositionen für den Synagogengottesdienst. Mit der Herausgabe des Buches soll an die bedeutende Musiktradition des europäischen Judentums erinnert werden. Zugleich will es Impulse geben für eine Erneuerung des synagogalen Gottesdienstes in den jüdischen Gemeinden heute.
