Content: In the face of challenges posed by a shifting digital media landscape, an array of international bodies continue to endorse public service media (PSM) as an essential component of democratisation. Yet how can PSM achieve viability in settings where models of media independence and credibility are unfamiliar or rejected by political leaders? The answer lies in a holistic approach that is neither media-centric nor defeatist about PSM’s place in a landscape marked by younger generations’ widespread preference for social media platforms. There are more ways of working towards PSM than are often recognized. Wide-ranging research from media NGOs and academics demonstrates the potential of diverse, incremental approaches to embedding the values and mechanisms of PSM. These are as likely to involve regulatory and licensing institutions, unions of media practitioners, audiences, advocacy groups or social media platforms as content producers themselves. This Policy Brief considers the issues, research and policy options around achieving viability for PSM. It concludes with six recommendations that are relevant to policymakers, practitioners and media studies specialists

Series Statement: Mass communication and journalism vol. 23
Content: Klappentext: "This collection is the first of its kind on the topic of media development. It brings together luminary thinkers in the field - both researchers and practitioners - to reflect on how advocacy groups, researchers, the international community and others can work to ensure that media can continue to serve as a force of democracy and development. But that mission faces considerable challenges. Media development paradigms are still too frequently associated with Western prejudices, or out of touch with the digital age. As we move past Western blueprints and into an uncertain digital future, what does media development mean? If we are to act meaningfully to shape the future of our increasingly mediated societies, we must answer this question"--

    ISBN: 9781003111924
    Series Statement: Routledge contemporary Africa
Content: "The book delves into the urgent topic of media ownership in Africa. It starts from a much-needed historical perspective then covers contemporary digital developments and the Chinese strategic involvement in the continent. This book examines the evolving forms of media ownership in Africa and how they interact with broader geopolitical changes in and outside the continent. The contributions look at different media ownerships and their implications on freedoms, governance, development and democracy across the continent to give a rich account of how power structures are both evolving yet challenged offering an ever-growing media ecosystem. Offering a significant representation of the diversity of existing media systems, the book goes beyond the postcolonial geographical divisions of North and South Africa to highlight common patterns and significant similarities and differences between the diverse African countries. The contributors to the volume expose media patterns that are shifting, battling, resurging, evolving but most importantly affecting development and democracy in a complex way. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of media and communications in Africa"--
