"In 'Der Perlmuttknopf' präsentiert Patricio Guzmán die Geschichte Chiles als eine Kulturgeschichte des Wassers und des Pazifischen Ozeans, der den größten Teil der Landesgrenze von Chile ausmacht: Die chilenische Küste misst 4.300 Kilometer. Nach 'Nostalgie des Lichts' von 2010 ist 'Der Perlmuttknopf' der 2. Teil von Guzmáns Dokumentarfilm-Trilogie über die bewegte Vergangenheit des südamerikanischen Landes. Der Film erzählt von der indigenen Bevölkerung Patagoniens, die eine besonders enge Beziehung zum Wasser hatte, und spannt einen Bogen von ihrer Auslöschung und dem Verlust ihrer kulturellen Schätze zu den Toten der Militärdiktatur, die von Pinochets Regime im Meer versenkt wurden. Die Kontinuität der Gewalt in der Geschichte Chiles kontrastiert mit atemberaubenden Bildern der chilenischen Landschaft, während in philosophischen Off-Kommentaren grundsätzliche Fragen nach der menschlichen Natur und ihrer Bestimmung anklingen.
