Dans ce livre, les images n'illustrent pas l'histoire mais l'histoire commente les images. La capitale du Togo, avec ses colonisateurs successifs et surtout sa bourgeoisie africaine dynamique, a produit beaucoup d'images. En voici 300, dont beaucoup n'ont jamais été publiées, échelonnées de 1884 à 1914, pour présenter Lomé à l'époque allemande, avec ses bâtiments de prestige, ses rues et ses espaces utilitaires, mais aussi ses habitants. Président d'Images & Mémoires, association spécialisée dans l'iconographie d'outre-mer, Stéphane Richemond s'intéresse depuis plusieurs années à celle de la ville de Lomé, où il a déjà contribué à la réalisation de plusieurs expositions. Il est par ailleurs membre de l'Académie des sciences d'outre-mer et de l'Institut de recherches historiques du Septentrion (université de Lille).
