    ISBN: 978-3-318-01248-4
Series Statement: Chemical immunology and allergy Vol. 89
Content: Pregnancy is a unique symbiotic union between mother and fetus which contradicts many of the general rules of immunology. The maternal immune system reacts towards the foreign tissue, but instead of triggering rejection, it tolerates, supports and regulates its development. The immunological mechanisms allowing the fetus to grow and survive are complex and may be affected by internal and external factors which may result in pregnancy disorders including infertility, abortions and preeclamptic disease. In this book leading scientists present the latest findings on the physiological mechanisms required for successful pregnancies, and the pathologies that may be caused by a disturbance of these mechanisms. The regulation of maternal NK cells, T cells and dendritic cells through hormones, cytokines, the complement system and HLA as well as other cell surface molecules is described in detail. The knowledge gained from the immunoregulation of pregnancy is also important in other fields of immunology and may lead to new therapeutic concepts in posttransplantation or allergy therapies, or in the fight against cancer. This volume provides fascinating insights for those readers who are not yet familiar with the immunology of reproduction while it also serves to update specialists on the most recent findings in the field

    ISBN: 978-3-318-01233-0
Series Statement: Chemical immunology and allergy Vol. 88
Content: Infertility is an increasing problem in many societies. The success rate of assisted reproduction is still below 30%, although the treatments and techniques have improved continuously. An important but often underestimated aspect of fertility and infertility is the immunology of gametes and the early embryo. Sperm is a potential target for autoimmunity in men and alloimmunity in women, but physiologically, such immunoreactions do not occur. Although the preimplantation embryo is semiallogeneic to the mother, no destructive reaction occurs but her uterus prepares a unique, finely balanced immunological environment around the implantation site, which is indispensable for successful early pregnancy. This book provides an overview of the current knowledge of physiological and pathological immune reactions which favor or disturb fertility. The regulation of embryo implantation and trophoblast invasion through cytokines, growth factors and other pregnancy-related immunoregulatory molecules is described in detail.Autoimmunity and allergy are presented as possible causes of reproductive failure. With contributions by leading international groups this volume provides a valuable introduction for those readers who are not yet familiar with the immunology of reproduction while it also serves to update specialists on the most recent findings in the field

    ISBN: 978-3-318-00935-4
Series Statement: Chemical immunology and allergy Vol. 82
Content: The incidence of allergies is increasing worldwide. Beside the well-established symptomatic treatments and subcutaneous immunotherapies, formerly known as de- or hyposensitization, a new form of treatment, local immunotherapy, has been developed in recent years. Local immunotherapy, though still controversially discussed, promises to be a curative, noninvasive, and easily applicable treatment for allergies. This volume summarizes the most current information on local immuntherapy compiled by internationally renowned specialists. In the methodology section, general aspects of local immunotherapy are presented including its history, allergen resorption and biodistribution, mechanisms of oral tolerance and practical experiences. The second section devoted to efficacy and safety presents findings from international placebo-controlled studies on nasal and sublingual immunotherapies with different allergens and for different allergic conditions including asthma and eczema. Possible side effects are also discussed. The concluding chapter critically evaluates the future prospects of this new method, pointing out still unresolved issues such as the exact immunological mechanisms, its long-term effects, or the standardization of dose and application intervals/duration.This state-of-the-art account will be of particular interest to scientists working in the field of allergy, clinical allergologists, pharmacists, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry
Note: a promising new approach to curing allergies
