Face à la prophétologie manichéenne de Faustus de Milev, qui, accueillant toutes les sagesses du monde, rejetait la seule révélation monothéiste des Hébreux, Augustin défend l'argument prophétique. Il développe une herméneutique scripturaire de la figure, où il décrit le peuple juif dans l'histoire du salut comme le 'peuple prophétique' annonçant le Christ et l'Église. Il élabore également une théologie du sacramentum qui donne aux Juifs contemporains le statut de'nation témoin' de la vérité des Écritures
