Der autobiografische Roman erzählt die Geschichte einer Pelzhändler-Familie aus Sylt. Geboren in den 1960er-Jahren, liegt ein Schwerpunkt der Erinnerungen auf den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren. An eine normale Kindheit war nicht zu denken, das Leben der Familie war vom Tourismus geprägt, ja bestimmt. S. Matthiessen erzählt von Nazis in wichtigen Ämtern und Hippies, wie sie überall zu finden waren. Ihr Schwerpunkt liegt jedoch in der Schilderung der Entwicklung und der Folgen des Sylt-Tourismus, auf dem Leben als "ewige Gastgeber", der Begegnung mit Promis. - Der Roman hinterlässt einen zwiespältigen Eindruck. Inselleben und zeitgeschichtlicher Hintergrund sind interessant. Wirklich zu fesseln vermag der Text aber nicht. Das liegt zum einen daran, dass die Fakten aufzählenden und erklärenden Charakter haben und nicht harmonisch in das fiktive Geschehen integriert werden, und zum anderen an den allzu ausführlichen Vor- und Nachworten, die - faktisch korrekt, im Ton aber lamentierend - den Ausverkauf der Insel und den Niedergang des Pelzhandels darstellen.
