Das Interesse gilt dem US-amerikanischen Boxkino der Tonfilmära: von »Body and Soul« über »Rocky« und »Raging Bull« bis zu »Fight Club«. Neben den Kampfszenen analysiert Stephan May die Inszenierung der boxerischen Existenzweise in ihren mythischen Kontexten und ästhetisch-reflexiven Brechungen. Theoretisch knüpft die Analyse an Walter Benjamin und Gilles Deleuze an. Aus der Perspektive des Boxfilms leistet »Faust trifft Auge« somit einen Beitrag zur Theorie massenmedial verfasster Subjektivität und moderner Ästhetik. Dabei fungiert das Verhältnis von Boxsport und Spielfilmkino als Impulsgeber der Theoriebildung.
