Pierre de L'Estoile, Grand audiencier of the Parisian parliament, was as fascinated by the current affairs and curiosities of Paris's political life as he was by the sensational gossip spread by the political satires that he collected. This first volume of the Registre-journal du règne de Henri IV covers the period from 1589 to 1591. The author begins his account of the consequences of the regicide and the circumstances of the military siege of the capital until the end of 1591, when the Duke of Mayenne regains control of the city. With distinctive clarity, L'Estoile reveals a dangerous and sectarian universe over the course of events that wreak havoc on traditional representations of social and judicial order. The catholic city, plunged into chaos, forms a self-contained world, wrought by fear, hostility, opportunism, and thwarted ambitions. Written in accordance with the original manuscripts, this journal is set apart by its exceptional richness and its interdisciplinary collaboration of authorities on history, literature, and lexicography.
