Boeselager, der kurz vor Drucklegung des Buches starb, war der letzte Überlebende der Attentäter vom 20. Juli 1944. Er besorgte den Sprengstoff und während Stauffenberg (zuletzt P. Steinbach, BA 3/08) die Bombe zündete, ritt er mit 1.200 Soldaten nach Berlin, um den Staatsstreich militärisch abzusichern. Für das mit zahlreichen Abbildungen versehene Buch haben die beim Hessischen Rundfunk tätigen Autoren das Privatarchiv Boeselagers ausgewertet und zahlreiche Interviews mit ihm geführt, von denen eins fast ein Drittel des Buchs einnimmt. Ausschnitte sind auf einer beigefügten CD zu hören. Der Textteil schildert die Bedeutung der Heeresgruppe Mitte für den militärischen Widerstand und skizziert den Weg des christlich und staatstreu erzogenen Offiziers in die Opposition. In der Vielzahl der Literatur zum 20. Juli vermittelt das für einen breiteren Leserkreis geschriebene Buch einen anschaulichen, durch authentische Zeitzeugenschaft beglaubigten Zugang zur Geschichte des Attentats und zur Gedankenwelt der sie tragenden konservativ-adligen Militärkreise.
