Abgelegen im Nordatlantik liegen die Färöer-Inseln, auf denen Heinesen 1900 geboren wurde. Politisch zu Dänemark gehörend, leben die Menschen auf den Inseln, mit ihrer kargen Landschaft umgeben vom Meer, in ihrer eigenen Welt. Diese Welt, die Menschen und die Mythen, fängt Heinesen in seinen Erzählungen ein. Seine Geschichten zeichnen sich nicht nur durch gefühlvolle Naturschilderungen aus, sie weisen zum Teil biografische Anlehnungen auf ("Meine romantische Großmutter") oder verarbeiten lokale Mythen. Die Geschichten, die einen ganz eigenen Ton aufweisen, vergleichbar vielleicht mit moderner grönländischer Literatur, beeindrucken. Besonders eindringlich sind die Schilderungen der gesellschaftlichen Unterschiede, die in dem streng umgrenzten Lebensraum besonders zur Geltung kommen. Wie in dem Erzählungsband von Gelléri ("Stromern", ID-A 43/18) ist nicht nur die Übersetzung hervorragend gelungen, sondern der Verlag hat sich auch mit der Gestaltung des Buches übertroffen. Überall, wo Erzählungen gut angenommen werden und in Bibliotheken mit Schwerpunkt auf dänischer Literatur.

Der Autor gab den Färöer-Inseln eine Stimme, eine dänische leider, sodass er nicht zu dem Ruhm gelangte, den seine Erzählungen verdient hätten. Mit Blick auf die Natur, die eigene Biografie, die Legenden und Mythen steht bei Heinesen stets der Mensch im Mittelpunkt.
