In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der aktuellen Forschung wird eine paradigmatische Lektüre der »Athenaeums-Frag-mente« und zugehöriger Texte der Jenaer Frühromantik als eines paradoxen Projekts vollendeter Mitteilung entwickelt. Die Romantik bleibt kontrovers: Manchen gilt sie als progressiv, anderen als repressiv und totalitär. Am Beispiel der »Athenaeums-Fragmente« und anderer Schriften der Frühromantik wird argumentiert, dass einer der wichtigsten Gründe für die Ambivalenz und Aktualität der Romantik in ihrem widersprüchlichen, ironischen und fragmentarischen Streben nach vollendeter Mitteilung liegt. Statt zwischen Schlegels Tendenzen zu Freiheit und Totalität zu entscheiden, werden die Gespräche zwischen Autoren und Texten rekonstruiert, die sein Projekt ermöglicht und die in Platons Symposion über den Eros ihr wichtigstes Vorbild und zugleich ihren ältesten Dialogpartner finden
