Die konservative "Jemenitische Vereinigung für Reformen" (at-Tagammu' al-Yamani li-'l-Islah), eine Verbindung der Stämme mit den Muslimbrüdern, ging aus den Parlamentswahlen 1993 als drittstärkste Partei hervor. Vor diesem aktuellen Hintergrund und im Kontext der offiziellen jemenitischen Haltung in der Golfkrise (Gegenstimme bzw. Enthaltung bei den anti-irakischen Resolutionen im UN-Sicherheitsrat) wird untersucht, welche Positionen die als Parteiorgan der Islah-Partei geltende Muslimbruderzeitung "as-Sahwa" (Das Erwachen) zur Golfkrise bezogen hat. As-Sahwa wertete den Krieg als "Kulturkampf zwischen dem islamischen Orient und dem christlichen Westen", ordnete ihn als "8. Kreuzzug" ein und gehörte zu den schärfsten Kritikern amerikanischer Truppenpräsenz auf saudischem Boden. Nach Gründung der Islah-Partei setzte sich auch in as-Sahwa eine pragmatische Haltung, die an die traditionell guten Beziehungen der jemenitischen Stämme zu Saudi-Arabien anknüpft, durch. (DÜI-Hns)
