Die Stahlerzeugung über den Weg des Hochofens bleibt trotz der raschen technologischen Entwicklung der verschiedenen Direktreduktionsverfahren in der jüngsten Zeit eindeutig dominierend. Der scharfe Wettbewerb auf dem Weltmarkt hat dazu geführt, daß die stahlproduzierenden Länder ihre Hochofenbetriebe weiter optimieren. Durch die Einführung von modernen Technologien wie z.B. Großraumhochofen, besseren Begichtungsmethoden, Einblasen von Wind höherer Temperatur, Anreicherung des Windes mit Sauerstoff, Einblasen von Zusatzstoffen, selektiver Mölleraufbereitung und höheren Regelungs- und Automatisierungsgraden wird die Wirtschaftlichkeit und Leistung der Hochofen merklich gesteigert. Verschärfte Umweltbedingungen, hohe Erzkosten und Recyclingprozesse fördern den Einsatz von eisenhaltigen Abfallstoffen in den Hochofenwerken. Dies sind z.B. Gichtstaube, Walzenschlämme oder Konverterauswürfe, die meist höhere Gehalte an Alkalien, Blei und Zink aufweisen. Diese Stoffe werden zum Teil aufbereitet und als Hochofeneinsatzmaterial wiederverwendet. Ihr Wiedereinsatz sowie die Verwendung von Koks mit höheren Aschegehalten führen zu einer erhöhten Belastung der Hochofen mit Kreislaufstoffen. Kreislaufstoffe sind diejenigen Stoffe im Hochofen, die während des Absinkens in den unteren Teil des Hochofens reduziert und verdampft werden. Die Reaktionsprodukte steigen teilweise mit dem Schachtgas auf und kondensieren in den oberen kälteren Zonen des Ofens. Sie wandern mit dem sinkenden Möller wieder in den unteren Teil des Ofens, werden reduziert und erneut von der Gasphase nach oben getragen. Dadurch bilden sich innere Kreisläufe in bestimmten Bereichen eines Hochofens. Kreislaufstoffe sind z.B. Zink, Blei, Natrium und Kalium, die mit dem Möller in den Hochofen gelangen
