Der französische Regisseur Bertrand Tavernier gehört seit den 1970er Jahren mit Filmen wie "Der Uhrmacher von St. Paul", "Round Midnight" und "Holy Lola" zu den herausragenden und traditionsbewussten Vertretern des europäischen Autorenkinos. Weniger bekannt ist seine Arbeit als Filmhistoriker und Kritiker, die von einer fortwährenden Cinephilie und dem Respekt vor den filmischen Leistungen anderer Regisseure geprägt ist. Im Mittelpunkt der Sendung steht das Buch "50 ans de cinéma américain" ("50 Jahre amerikanisches Kino"), das Tavernier zusammen mit dem in den USA lebenden Filmpublizisten Jean-Pierre Coursodon verfasst hat. Das 1960 veröffentlichte und 1995 überarbeitete Werk ist das einzigartige Zeugnis einer unermüdlichen Entdeckerfreude und jahrzehntelangen leidenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Hollywoodkino. Tavernier und Coursodon geben in der Sendung Auskunft über die Entstehungsgeschichte des Buches, die Grundlagen ihrer Cinephilie und ihre sehr eigenwillige Haltung zu Themen, Mythen und Erzählkonventionen des amerikanischen Films.
