TON-E Während des Aufenthaltes von Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) in den Vereinigten Staaten in den frühen 1940er Jahren begann er, seine ersten Arrangements traditioneller Volkslieder zu treffen. Auf diese Weise konnte sich der damalige Komponist mit Heimweh wieder mit seinen englischen Wurzeln verbinden. Sie dienten auch als Zugaben und "leichteres" Material für seine zahlreichen Konzerte mit Peter Pears. Die erste Sammlung war so erfolgreich und nützlich, dass Britten weitere sechs Bände arrangierte, darunter französische, schottische und irische sowie englische Volkslieder, die letzten (für Tenor und Harfe) aus dem letzten Jahr seines Lebens. Sie wurden zu festen Bestandteilen von Britten- und Birnen-Rezitalprogrammen und werden bis heute in großem Umfang aufgeführt. Britten hatte nicht durch "Authentizität" eingeschränkt, sondern mit der Verwendung von Volksliedern als thematisches Material experimentiert, ihnen aber absichtlich eine unkonventionelle, sogar skurrile Behandlung verliehen, die den eigenen Erwartungen widersprach und den manchmal sehr vertrauten Melodien seinen persönlichen Stempel aufdrückte. Mark Milhofer, einer der vielseitigsten Tenöre seiner Generation, ist in der Musik von Rossini ebenso zu Hause wie im Repertoire von Monteverdi, Mozart oder Benjamin Britten. Er sang an der Londoner Royal Opera, der Staatsoper Berlin, der Opera Stuttgart, Wien und zahlreichen anderen berühmten Opernhäusern. Sein Klavierpartner ist Marco Scolastra, einer der führenden italienischen Begleiter und Kammermusiker.
