Rez.: Die Geschichte beginnt ähnlich wie die der Togoerin Fauziya Kassindja ("Niemand sieht dich ...", BA 10/98), doch sie endet sehr viel glücklicher. Waris Dirie ist die Tochter einer Nomadenfamilie in der Wüste Somalias. Als sie mit 13 Jahren einen alten Mann heiraten soll, flieht sie zu Verwandten nach Mogadischu. Als Dienstmädchen des Botschafters kommt sie nach London und wird dort durch einen glücklichen Zufall von einem Modefotografen entdeckt. Trotz Problemen mit der Einwanderungsbehörde (sie geht schließlich eine Scheinehe ein, um einen Paß zu bekommen), trotz vieler Schwierigkeiten aus ihrer Biographie (z.B. ist sie beschnitten und kann nicht lesen) schafft sie den Sprung, macht Karriere als Model und findet auch ihr privates Glück. Eine schöne, positive Geschichte, aber auch eine Anklage gegen die grausame Praxis der Beschneidung von Mädchen, die in vielen Ländern Afrikas üblich ist. (2)
