So-called Gypsy camps (Zigeunerlager) coexisted with concentration camps in Nazi Germany before 1939. These municipal camps segregated Sinti and Roma and served as pools for forced labor; after 1941, they became assembly centers for deportation to the extermination camps. The municipal Gypsy camps provided easy access for systematic anthropological and racial registration. Conditions in these camps were coordinated by the Deutscher Gemeindetag reporting to the Reich Ministry of Interior. The patterns of deporting and holding Sinti and Roma as family units commenced in the municipal Gypsy camps and ended in the Gypsy "family camp" (BIIe) at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
