Dieser Vierteiler ist eine der größten europäischen Fernsehproduktionen der 90er Jahre. Er erzählt die Geschichte einer elsässischen Industriellenfamilie und des Dorfes Alsheim zwischen 1870 und 1953, über drei Kriege hinweg. Es ist zugleich die Geschichte einer Region: des Elsass, der "schönen Provinz" mit einer ruhmreichen Vergangenheit. Diese Gegend wurde durch die Geschichte und Rivalität der zwei Großmächte Deutschland und Frankreich geprägt, die sich lange Zeit als "Erbfeinde" ansahen.Daher war das Elsass Jahrhunderte lang Schauplatz von Konflikten, zerrissen zwischen zwei Kulturen und zwei Nationen. Innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts hat das Elsass viermal seine Nationalität wechseln müssen: Nach dem dreißigjährigen Krieg unter Ludwig XIV. französisch geworden, blieb es ab 1870 fast fünfzig Jahre lang deutsch. 1918 gehörte es wieder zu Frankreich, ab 1940 zu Deutschland, um schließlich 1944 wieder endgültig französisch zu werden. Die Dreharbeiten zu dieser Familiensaga dauerten 107 Tage und fanden an verschiedenen Schauplätzen im Elsass statt. 54 Techniker, 124 Schauspieler und 1.500 Statisten haben an dieser Produktion mitgewirkt, die vom Elsässischen Regionalrat und der Stadt Straßburg unterstützt wurde. Das Drehbuch enthielt Szenen in drei Sprachen: deutsch, elsässisch und französisch, so dass jeder Schauspieler in seiner eigenen Sprache spielte. Die Personen und Ereignisse sind fiktiv, stützen sich jedoch auf tatsächliche Begebenheiten, die aus Memoiren entnommen, aus Geschichtsbüchern rekonstruiert oder auch von Zeitzeugen berichtet wurden.
