Die Geburt des Theaters ist ein Mysterium, das sich vor mehr als 2500 Jahren ereignet hat. Zeugnisse dieser kraftvollen, bis heute in Schauspiel, Oper und Theaterbau fortwirkenden Kunst sind zahlreich, gleichwohl ungenügend. Wir sehen hunderte von antiken Theaterbauten rund um das Mittelmeer, teils missbraucht als Steinbrüche für Gebäude, meist von der Natur überwuchert. Ausgrabungen förderten Vasen, Schalen und Terrakotten ans Licht, die auf die griechische Theaterpraxis Rückschlüsse erlauben. In dem hier vorliegenden Begleitband zur Ausstellung im weltweit ältesten, von anderen Institutionen unabhängigen Deutschen Theatermuseum in München werden grundlegende Fragen gestellt: Wie und wann ist Theater entstanden? Wie war die Gesellschaft konstituiert, die bereit war, viel Geld in diese Kunst zu investieren? Wo wurde gespielt? Wer waren die Autoren, die Schauspieler, Musiker? Und wie hatte man sich die Aufführungen vorzustellen? Fragen, die nur in enger Zusammenarbeit mit führenden Archäologen, Altphilologen, Bühnen- und Maskenbildnern sowie Technikern, die teilweise ihre neuesten Forschungen ausbreiten, beantwortet werden konnten.
