In dem kleinen norwegischen Städtchen Skogli bereiten sich alle auf das bevorstehende Weihnachtsfest vor. Der Arzt Knuts kommt in der Winternacht von einem Hausbesuch zurück, als er für einen Notfall in eine abgelegene Blockhütte kommen soll. Ein junges ausländisches Paar musste auf der Durchreise stoppen, weil bei der Schwangeren die Wehen einsetzten. - Ein Obdachloser bettelt für eine Fahrkarte, damit er nach vielen Jahren seine alten Eltern noch einmal besuchen kann. Doch auf den Straßen von Skogli ist kaum noch jemand unterwegs. Ń Karin fühlt sich allein, weil ihr Geliebter, der verheiratet ist, sich zum Weihnachtsfest von ihr verabschiedet hat. - Zwei Jugendliche, eine Muslimin und ein gleichaltriger Freund, kommen sich näher. Der norwegische Regisseur Bent Hamer ("Kitchen Stories", "O̷Horton") erzählt in seinem modernen Weihnachtsmärchen in Episoden verschiedene Schicksale, die sich manchmal auch kreuzen. In all diesen Konstellationen spielen die besonderen Wünsche und Sehnsüchte, die das "Fest der Liebe" gemeinhin weckt, eine Rolle und realistischerweise werden sie selten erfüllt. So gesehen ist "Home for Christmas" ein realistisches Weihnachtsmärchen, das in die Jahreszeit passt, weil es eben doch etwas gefühlsselig ist. Und es hebt sich allemal positiv von den vielen oberflächlichen Weihnachtskomödien ab, die jetzt erscheinen und sich an Erwachsene oder die ganze Familie richten.
