Die Künstlerin Beate Passow entwirft in ihrem Bilderzyklus "Monkey Business" eine rätselhafte Fabelwelt mit politischer Dimension. Die in Schwarz-Weiß gehaltenen Bilder, die sich bei näherer Betrachtung als raffinierte Tapisserien entpuppen, hinterfragen die herrschenden Systeme, ökonomischen Strukturen und politischen Bewegungen des gegenwärtigen Europas. Ein Berberaffe sitzt auf einem martialischen Kanonenrohr auf Gibraltar, ein mächtiger Bär bespringt einen Bullen, ein skelettiertes Wesen schreitet über zertrümmerte Flüchtlingsboote in Lampedusa hinweg. Die seltsamen Figuren, die "Monkey Business" bevölkern, erzählen eine eindringliche Mythologie des 21. Jahrhunderts. In ihrer narrativen Anlage unterläuft sie die große Tradition der Tapisserie, indem sie nicht Helden und Herrscher lobt, sondern Kritik übt – am heutigen Europa. Einst als Hort der Demokratie und Humanität gefeiert, ist es heute geprägt von einer militärischen Abwehrhaltung an seinen Grenzen, von einem durch und durch korrumpierten Kapitalismus und von einem immer schamloser auftretenden Neonazismus
