S'il est habituel, et pratique, de classer les artistes par écoles, catégories ou influences, ce type de cloisonnement peut se révéler peu adapté à certaines personnalités ayant toute leur vie cherché à y échapper. Joseph-Félix Bouchor appartient précisément à cette catégorie d'artistes qu'il n'est pas possible de rattacher à un mouvement, ou plutôt qu'il faudrait rattacher à plusieurs : académiste, orientaliste, naturaliste, paysagiste, portraitiste, peintre militaire, il fut tout cela successivement...et parfois en même temps. Le talent seul du peintre n'apporte qu'une explication fragmentaire à cette diversité. Etudier une personnalité aussi complexe nécessite de comprendre son époque, en d'autres termes d'interroger l'environnement pour expliquer l'homme. Né dans une famille de médecin, il mène une vie de bohème à Montmartre avec son frère poète, Maurice Bouchor, puis il se forme à la peinture en forêt de Fontainebleau. Voyageant beaucoup, il peint l'Égypte, l'Algérie, le Maroc... avant de s'installer à Freneuse en Seine-Maritime. À portée de Paris, ce coin de Normandie offre bien des thèmes à ce peintre de salon qui a un joli succès
