-- "What does romanticism have to do with contemporary design? The increasing globalization, mobility, the ubiquitous flood of information, increasing alienation and the loss of privacy are opposing new values such as individuality, sensuality, uniqueness and closeness to nature. Romantic tendencies can be seen, for example, in patterns, materials and processing methods, but also in concepts that take up and reinterpret poetic, ironic and even abysmal principles of Romanticism. These designs are represented in this catalog by selected works by internationally renowned designers."
Content: MACHINE-GENERATED SUMMARY NOTE: "In literature, music and art, the term 'Romanticism' refers to an era that began around the time of the French Revolution and continued into the Victorian period. Today we associate the word with attributes such as 'dreamy,' 'rhapsodic' and 'poetic,' but also with 'self-absorbed' or even 'kitsch.' This volume identifies a shift in contemporary design toward themes of metamorphosis, heroic individualism, reverie and pastoralism--all key concerns of the Romantic era, which may be seen as offering an alternative heritage to the more austere precedent of modernist design. Products by Atelier NL, Barnaby Barford, Pieke Bergmans, Tord Boontje, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Hussein Chalayan, Formafantasma, Martino Gamper, Max Lamb, Doshi Levien, Makkink & Bey, Ingo Maurer, Jo Meesters, Nendo, Bertjan Pot, Philippe Starck, Mats Theselius, Ionna Vautrin, Sylvain Willenz and many others are surveyed."

Content: "In a unique juxtaposition of pure and applied art the exhibition "The rectangular view. Design and art in dialogue -- highlights of an American private collection" presents a selection from this collection which has never before been on public display in Europe and America. While most private collections have as a rule a well-defined focal point, this collection encourages visitors to compare works across disciplines and different genres. It brings together works of constructivist and concrete art with design classics and also comprises outstanding objects of interior and industrial design, which are less well-known in Germany, such as typical objects of American Art Déco. This includes tableware, so-called giftware and bar utensils, a world of forms which does not exist in Europe in this variety. [...] Although at first glance these complexes within the collection seem heterogeneous, it is possible to see a guiding principle alongside aesthetic aspects which is given a programmatic framework with the title of this exhibition -- "The rectangular view". All the objects -- whether examples of pure or applied art -- follow the rules of a constructivist-geometrical concept and point to to the term "rectangular view".
