Die klassische Moderne war für Frauen Chance und Herausforderung zugleich. Das Leben von Sibyl Moholy-Nagy, geboren 1903 in Loschwitz als Tochter des Werkbundarchitekten Martin Pietzsch, zeigt dies in eindrücklicher Weise. Als junge Frau musste sie ihre Sehnsucht nach Freiheit und Emanzipation, nach Selbstverwirklichung im Beruf mit den traditionellen Erwartungen ihres dominanten Vaters vermitteln. Während ihrer Arbeit in der Berliner Filmindustrie lernte sie 1930 den ehemaligen Bauhausmeister László Moholy-Nagy kennen. Als seine Ehefrau und Mitarbeiterin und als Mutter seiner Kinder folgte sie ihm nach London und Chicago und war dort Teil der Avant-Garde-Diaspora ? wie viele deutsche Intellektuelle in den USA. Nach Moholys frühem Tod veröffentlichte sie dessen Biografie, Bücher über Architektur und Zeitschriftenartikel. Sie wurde eine einflussreiche und angesehene Wissenschaftlerin und Architekturkritikerin, setzte sich mit der zeitgenössischen Kunst und Architektur auseinander und war eine der frühen Stimmen, die Zweifel am Weg der modernen Architektur äußerten
