    Series Statement: AFI film readers
Content: "The question of what bearing scientific inquiry has upon the humanities is the subject of an important, ongoing debate in film and media studies. In the latest addition to the AFI Film Readers series, Cognitive Media Theory presents a case that the theorization of film and media spectatorship needs to take current empirical research in the sciences into consideration, and to show how empirical research informs film and media studies. Exploring topics that range from color perception and moral engagement to our cognitive response to humor, Cognitive Media Theory offers film and media scholars and advanced students an introduction to current cognitive theory through original essays that critically reflect upon the current state of the field. Contributors address key topics, genres, and media forms, and present the findings of specific experiments and case studies conducted across film, television, and video games"..

    ISBN: 978-1-119-67711-6 , 978-1-119-67713-0
Content: "This volume's topic, the varied intersections and conjunctions of motion pictures and public value, is somewhat daunting in its potential scope. As the table of contents indicates, the book is structured in terms of (a non-exhaustive list of) different sorts of value that, we claim, can be understood as yielding public value or values that are partly constitutive of a common good. Given the breadth and heterogeneity of the contributions collected here, organised in seven different sections, our discussion in this main introduction will remain quite general. Each section of the book is preceded by a section introduction, in which we outline the main themes of the section and draw some connections between the individual chapters therein. For now, then, we will aim to do just two things. First, we will sketch a bit of background context for the project, outline its aims, and describe the approaches that characterise the contributions to the volume. Then, we will explain how we are conceiving of the concepts of 'motion pictures,' 'value,' and 'public value' respectively"--

    ISBN: 978-1-4744-7446-7 , 978-1-4744-7447-4
Content: This book investigates the interrelations between aesthetics, ethics and politics in a variety of visual media forms, ranging across art installations, film and television, interactive documentaries, painting, photography, social media and videogames. An international mix of emerging and established authors, with interdisciplinary expertise, explores how different ethical questions, political implications and aesthetic pleasures arise and shape one another in distinct visual media. Investigating themes such as the use of cinema as a medium for ethical and political thought, how documentary subjects both conceal and reveal truth, the new ethical challenges arising from interactive media and the role of images in responding to political events and trauma, this is a groundbreaking work about the interrelations of aesthetic, ethical and political values in visual media.

    Series Statement: Thinking art
Content: Artistic Creation and Ethical Criticism advances a new, production-oriented approach to the ethical criticism of art. Its overarching arguments are these: (1) Judgments of an artwork's ethical value are often made in terms of how it was created, and, furthermore, this is in part because some art forms more readily lend themselves to this form of ethical appraisal. (2) Among the ways in which art is ethically criticized, this production-oriented approach more often leads to practical consequences (censure, dismissal, prosecution, shifts in policy, legislation) because its claim to objectivity is less contested than that of other sorts of ethical criticism. (3) Together, (1) and (2) constitute an approach to the ethical criticism of art that is not only tacit in many art appreciative practices, but which is rationally warranted and defensible.
