Diese Studie widmet sich der Geschichte der deutschen Filmsynchronisation zwischen 1895 und der Mitte der 1950er Jahre. Der Autor zeigt historisch gewachsene Traditionslinien auf und ordnet diese in gesellschaftlich-politisch-ökonomische Prozesse ein. Dabei geht er der Fragestellung nach, ob es in der Geschichte der deutschen Filmsynchronisation konnektive Strukturen gibt, mit denen sich durch wiederholende Handlungslinien wiedererkennbare Muster nachweisen lassen. Das Buch ergänzt bekanntere Aspekte der Filmgeschichte durch bisher nicht ausgewertete Materialien. So entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild der Geschichte des Synchronisierens von Kinofilmen, das gleichermaßen den Wandel medienpolitischer Interessen im historischen Kontext erzählt.
