Content: Claims about a pursuit of justice weave through all periods of China's modern history. But what do authorities mean when they refer to 'justice' and do Chinese citizens interpret justice in the same way as their leaders? This book explores how certain ideas about justice have come to be dominant in Chinese polity and society and how some conceptions of justice have been rendered more powerful and legitimate than others. This book's focus on 'how' justice works incorporates a concern about the processes that lead to the making, un-making and re-making of distinct conceptions of justice. Investigating the processes and frameworks through which certain ideas about justice have come to the political and social forefront in China today, this innovative work explains how these ideas are articulated through spoken performances and written expression by both the party-state and its citizenry.

Content: "This book examines the relationship between international human rights standards and local legal norms in the People's Republic of China (PRC). Focussing on the realm of criminal justice in post-Deng China, Criminal Procedure Law reforms and their impact on the PRC's ratification of and future accession to the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, this book examines the limits to the protection of criminal suspects rights during pre-trial proceedings. Notwithstanding the significance of pre-trial proceedings in the Chinese criminal justice system, to date no other publication in a Western language has systematically focussed on this important issue. This book thus fills a serious gap in the literature by offering a detailed discussion of this aspect of criminal justice and human rights in contemporary China. The book is intended as a contribution to the study of Chinese law, human rights law and comparative criminal justice, and by considering developments in Chinese local legal culture, it also explores issues of broader interest to comparativists and legal sociologists"--Provided by publisher

Series Statement: Made in China yearbook 2017
Content: Annotation, According to the Chinese zodiac, 2017 was the year of the 'fire rooster', an animal often associated with the mythical fenghuang, a magnificently beautiful bird whose appearance is believed to mark the beginning of a new era of peaceful flourishing. Considering the auspicious symbolism surrounding the fenghuang, it is fitting that on 18 October 2017, President Xi Jinping took to the stage of the Nineteenth Party Congress to proclaim the beginning of a 'new era' for Chinese socialism. However, in spite of such ecumenical proclamations, it became immediately evident that not all in China would be welcome to reap the rewards promised by the authorities. Migrant workers, for one, remain disposable. Lawyers, activists and even ordinary citizens who dare to express critical views also hardly find a place in Xi's brave new world. This Yearbook traces the stark new 'gilded age' inaugurated by the Chinese Communist Party. It does so through a collection of more than 40 original essays on labour, civil society and human rights in China and beyond, penned by leading scholars and practitioners from around the world
