Vorschau Konkurrenz ist in modernen Gesellschaften allgegenwärtig. Doch waren auch in der Frühen Neuzeit Wettkampf und Wettbewerb weit verbreitet, etwa in Form von Rangkonflikten, Ehrenhändeln oder der Konkurrenz zwischen den Konfessionen. Der entscheidende Unterschied zum modernen Konkurrenzverständnis bestand darin, dass frühneuzeitliche Akteure in den dynamisierenden Wirkungen der Konkurrenz selten einen Wert sahen. Aus dieser Konstellation ergab sich eine Spannung zwischen alltäglicher Konkurrenzerfahrung und dynamischen Wirkungen von Wettbewerb und Rivalität auf der einen und Einhegung, Leugnung oder Uminterpretation agonaler Konkurrenz auf der anderen Seite. Diese Konstellation war für die Frühe Neuzeit charakteristisch und ermöglicht einen Einblick in die Normen- und Werteordnung der Epoche.
