Expertise in the colonial world can be characterized, more perhaps than in any other context, by the tension between abstract knowledge and acquaintance with the field as inspirations for decision making. The League of Nations mandates instituted after World War I should not be understood as a laboratory of expertise in the colonial world, but as an early instance of the implications of bringing experts to the global South. Not only…

In what ways were the Christian missions in the Levant places of production of 'oriental' knowledge? Many late nineteenth and early twentieth-century academics utilised knowledge production from Christian missions, notably by way of scholarly Orientalism. However, the history of this knowledge is also a history of representations: while missionary knowledge helped showcase the cultural and religious traditions of Eastern Christianity, what were the underlying motives and especially the consequences? This book examines the formulation and circulation of Eastern Christian knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean, the study of which is sometimes rooted in non-Anglophone academic traditions. The aim is to shed light on how knowledge relating to Eastern Christianity was assimilated in Europe, as well as the role missions played in this process, especially from the last third of the nineteenth century, when the institutions and instruments for the circulation of knowledge emerged. Another objective is to address the circulations and transformations of this knowledge on either side of the Mediterranean: collected and developed in major European libraries and universities, it was integrated by the governance structures of churches, but quite often also returned to the space it originated from, where it was reappropriated and gave rise to patrimonial processes, notably alongside the sometimes tragic experiences of certain communities during the end of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of new states. Christian missions, at the intersection of East and West, were at the heart of this dynamic

Content: Based on a connected, relational and multidisciplinary approach (history, ethnography, political science, and theology), Mission and Preaching tackles the notion of mission through the analysis of preaching activities and religious dynamics across Christianity, Islam and Judaism, in the Middle East and North Africa, from the late 19th century until today. The 13 chapters reveal points of contact, exchange, and circulation, considering the MENA region as a central observatory. The volume offers a new chronology of the missionary phenomenon and calls for further cross-cutting approaches to decompartmentalise it, arguing that these approaches constitute useful entry points to shed new light on religious dynamics and social transformations in the MENA region.
Content: Holy sites in Jordan are central to the process of national construction, especially nowadays, as the country claims to be part of the Christian and Muslim Holy Lands. These places are commonly used for self-definition both by local communities and the country's rulers. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Jordan's holy sites were places of diversity, witnessing the shaping of identities. Focusing on a double process, in local societies, of territorialization and confession-building, the present study shows how these sites have ensured the continued existence of memorial and traditional practices linked to various social components in three cities of southern Jordan, namely Karak, Ma' ân and Wâdî Mûsâ. A long term approach allows one to grasp the changes incurred, over time, by local topographies, as well as their evolving meanings. At various levels, political religious strategies have focused on these places of power. As an administrator of a holy site, one was in a position to favor the blossoming of local notabilities, as well as to ensure political balance between various parts of the local societies. The gradual institutionalization of the Holy sites' administration led to social reconfigurations. Holy sites served many functions -as places of memory, as centers of power, as tourist attractions -, all of which are reviewed in this study with an aim to enlighten the interactions between local and official religious policies. Both the sites' pilgrims and their administrators are scrutinized here as representative of the movement whose behaviors can serve to analyse the identity dynamics at hand in Jordan
