Note: The International Conference on the History of Original Ideas and Basic Discoveries, held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily, July 27-August 4, 1994, brought together sixty of the leading scientists including many Nobel Laureates in high energy physics, principal contributors in other fields of physics such as high Tc superconductivity, particle accelerators and detector instrumentation, and thirty-six talented younger physicists selected from candidates throughout the world. The scientific program, including 49 lectures and a discussion session on the "Status and Future Directions in High Energy Physics" was inspired by the conference theme: The key experimental discoveries and theoretical breakthroughs of the last 50 years, in particle physics and related fields, have led us to a powerful description of matter in terms of three quark and three lepton families and four fundamental interactions. The most recent generation of experiments at e+e- and proton-proton colliders, and corresponding advances in theoretical calculations, have given us remarkably precise determinations of the basic parameters of the electroweak and strong interactions. These developments, while showing the striking internal consistency of the Standard Model, have also sharpened our view of the many unanswered questions which remain for the next generation: the origin and pattern of particle masses and families, the unification of the interactions including gravity, and the relation between the laws of physics and the initial conditions of the universe

Note: The first Europhysics Study Conference on Electroweak Effects at High Energies was held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from February 1 -12, 1983. The conference was attended by 61 physicists from 11 countries. The conference was sponsored by the European Physical Society, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Technological Research, the Sicilian Regional Government and the California Institute of Technology. CONFERENCE FORMAT The Study Conference followed a new intensive format in which the state of our knowledge of the electroweak interaction, and the relation of the electroweak sector to Grand Unified and Superunified Theories was reviewed in some depth. During the two week conference, 54 experimental and theoretical talks were presented, and four evening discussion sessions were held. The Erice surroundings, the wide-ranging conference program, and the fact that nearly all of the participants were directly involved in recent major experimental or theoretical developments, led to animated and very friendly discussions. Participants had the rare opportunity to view most of the major trends in high energy physics in a short interval of time, and to discuss and contemplate the trends in the uniquely peaceful yet stimulating atmosphere which is an Erice tradition

Content: Newman shows how the cultural tradition of hospitality has encouragedthe growth of Atlanta's convention and tourist industry and contributedto the city's rapid development.Harvey Newman finds that the international attention Atlantaenjoys because of its recent hosting of the Olympics is actually the culminationof a tradition of boosterism that dates back to antebellum times and thecentral place of hospitality within southern culture. Newman's study considershow social forces, historic events, and major entrepreneurs have influencedAtlanta's commercial development. Throughout the city's history, Newmanobserves, the value of southern hospitality has ensured ongoing supportfor efforts to develop hospitality as a commercial enterprise.Newman calls particular attention to how issues of race, gender, ethnicity, and class have affected the development of the Atlantahospitality industry. African Americans traditionally provided much ofthe labor for the industry, first as slaves who cooked, cleaned, carriedbags, and shined shoes at railroad inns and later as workers in the restaurantsand hotels established in the central city. Segregation led African Americansto develop their own commercial areas and business districts. In the earlyyears, women--black and white--found that hospitality was one of the fewindustries in which they were allowed to work: white widows often ran boardinghouses, and black women found work cooking and cleaning in hotels and restaurants.Although the transformation of downtown Atlanta into atourist and convention center has provided jobs for many residents, Newmanconcludes that people in the central city--mostly African Americans--havenot shared equally in the region's overall economic growth. Instead, Newmanconsiders the division and tension between downtown and the suburbs, andhe questions whether the city should continue to make large public investmentsin hospitality businesses that are available in other localities and donot reflect the region's specific culture. Instead, Newman suggests thecity invest in smaller projects, especially those that emphasize the cultureof the South and those that aim to revitalize African American neighborhoodsand promote the culture of the South shared by blacks and whites.

Content: The first collection of its kind to examine tourism as a complicated and vital force in southern history, culture, and economics. Anyone who has seen Rock City, wandered the grounds of Graceland, hiked in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or watched the mermaids swim at Weeki Wachee knows the southern United States offers visitors a rich variety of scenic, cultural, and leisure activities. Tourism has been, and is still, one of the most powerful economic forces in the modern South. It is a multibillion-dollar industry that creates jobs and generates revenue while drawing visitors from aroun
