Gegen Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts in London entstanden, erscheint der Zirkus mit seiner Manege als eine Art Gegenwelt zum Alltag. Die bewusste Inszenierung von schönem Schein und atemberaubender Akrobatik lösten immer schon große Faszination aus. Zugleich ist diese Welt der Illusionen mit gesellschaftlichen Kontroversen und Kritik behaftet, denen sich internationale Künstler:innen und führende Expert:innen widmen. In der Welt des Zirkus war ein Bewusstsein für ethische Haltungen gegenüber Mensch und Tier lange Zeit schlichtweg nicht existent. Diskriminierung, Stigmatisierung und Unterdrückung standen auf der Tagesordnung, wie z.B. die kommerzielle Zurschaustellung der sog. "Freaks of nature" zeigt. Mit einschlägigen Essays und Werken internationaler, zeitgenössischer Künstler:innen bietet der Band den Ausgangspunkt für künstlerische, kulturhistorische, tierethische sowie rassismuskritische Untersuchungen und hinterfragt aktuelle gesellschaftliche Strukturen.
