Patagonien hat die doppelte Staatsbürgerschaft, es erstreckt sich von den Grenzflüssen Río Bío Bío (Chile) und Río Colorado (Argentinien) bis hinunter an das ausgefaserte Ende des Kontinents, ein Drittel chilenisch, zwei Drittel argentinisch, und mittendrin die Anden, die säuberlich gestaffelt Gipfel an Gipfel Richtung Horizont marschieren. Im Süden die harsche Tierra del Fuego, Feuerland, abgetrennt vom Festland durch die Magellanstrasse. Darüber - ganz grob unterteilt - das Gebiet der Gletscher, dann das der großen Schafsfarmen, dann, ziemlich im Norden schon, der Lake District, das Reich der Vulkane, ein Paradies für Bergsteiger, Trekker und Mountainbiker.
