Content: The stranger ( survenant ) represents an important theme in Quebec literature of the second half of the twentieth century. This book analyses the role of the survenant in five major novels dating from 1945 to 1992 and shows how the theme is constantly reworked and revitalised by the authors selected. The arrival of a survenant in a community brings to the surface the conflicts and tensions which had been latent. The consequences can be tragic for all concerned. At the least the community is changed forever. This is the first study of the way in which different Quebecois authors treat the survenant and should be of interest to all students of Quebec literature and culture.

Content: " How well do you know the people you love...? Best friends Noah Sadler and Abdi Mahad have always been inseparable. But when Noah is found floating unconscious in Bristol's Feeder Canal, Abdi can't8212 or won't8212 tell anyone what happened. Just back from a mandatory leave following his last case, Detective Jim Clemo is now assigned to look into this unfortunate accident. But tragedy strikes and what looked like the simple case of a prank gone wrong soon ignites into a public battle. Noah is British. Abdi is a Somali refugee. And social tensions have been rising rapidly in Bristol. Against this background of fear and fury two families fight for their sons and for the truth. Neither of them know how far they will have to go, what demons they will have to face, what pain they will have to suffer. Because the truth hurts. "
Content: Biographisches: " Gilly Macmillan is the internationally bestselling author of What She Knew , The Perfect Girl , Odd Child Out , I Know You Know , The Nanny, and To Tell You the Truth. She resides in Bristol, England. " Rezension(2): "〈a href=http://www.publishersweekly.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/pw_logo.png alt=Publisher's Weekly border=0 /〉〈/a〉: August 28, 2017 Noah Sadler, a native-born British boy, and Abdi Mahad, a refugee from Somalia, become best friends at Medes College, a prestigious Bristol secondary school, in this engrossing novel from Macmillan ( The Perfect Girl ). Late one night, Noah and Abdi meet on the bank of the Feeder Canal, into which Noah falls. Det. Insp. Jim Clemo takes charge of the subsequent investigation to ascertain whether Abdi pushed Noah or it was an accident. Neither boy can give a version of what happened: Noah because he’s in an induced coma, and Abdi because he remains mute, either refusing to cooperate or deeply in shock. When crime reporter Emma Zhang, Jim’s former lover, hears of the incident, she seeks out Noah’s parents. Her reporting, however, threatens to inflame anti-immigrant sentiments, particularly by raising the suspicion that the police are holding back so as not to exacerbate racial tensions. Both Noah’s and Abdi’s families are forced to confront emotions and secrets buried over the years. The action builds to a shattering conclusion. Agent: Nelle Andrew, Peters, Fraser and Dunlop (U.K.). " Rezension(3): "〈a href=http://lj.libraryjournal.com/ target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/libraryjournal_logo.png alt=Library Journal border=0 /〉〈/a〉: Starred review from September 1, 2017 Macmillan's third novel (after What She Knew and The Perfect Girl) reveals the story of the friendship between two 15-year-old boys and the issues each face through the police investigation into their involvement in what appears to be a tragic accident. Noah Sadler, an only child from a privileged family, is pulled from a canal with serious injuries while his Somali-born friend, Abdi Hasad, looks on. Brought in to investigate the matter, Det. Jim Clemo finds that it may not have been an accident and, with social tensions in Bristol already high and a reporter determined to use the story to ratchet them even higher, learning what really happened becomes increasingly urgent. VERDICT With characters who are sympathetic and believable, Macmillan's latest will keep readers in suspense to the very end. Highly recommended.--Lisa O'Hara, Univ. of Manitoba Libs., Winnipeg Copyright 2017 Library Journal, LLC Used with permission. " Rezension(4): "〈a href=https://www.booklistonline.com target=blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/booklist_logo.png alt=Booklist border=0 /〉〈/a〉: September 15, 2017 Noah and Abdi have been best friends ever since Noah came to school in Bristol, England, in the middle of the year, fresh from cancer treatment. Abdi, whose family are immigrants from a Somali refugee camp, is glad of a friend, even if that friend is a little needy and self-absorbed. The two are inseparable, but then the worst happens: during a sleepover, the two take a middle-of-the-night excursion, and Noah fallsor is pushed?into the canal, now he's fighting for his life. What happened that night and how wartime terrors insinuate themselves into refugees' new lives are the dual focus of this gripping look at grief, friendship, and class divides. Macmillan excels at getting into the minds of terrified, brokenhearted parents, and even if, at times, she veers too much toward telling rather than showing, this mix of police procedural and thriller will satisfy fans of the author's previous work as well as those looking for something after Tana French.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.) Content: "Penguin presents the audiobook edition of The Future of Capitalism by Paul Collier, read by Peter Noble. Deep new rifts are tearing apart the fabric of Britain and other Western societies: thriving cities versus the provinces, the highly skilled elite versus the less educated, wealthy versus developing countries. As these divides deepen, we have lost the sense of ethical obligation to others that was crucial to the rise of post-war social democracy. So far these rifts have been answered only by the revivalist ideologies of populism and socialism, leading to the seismic upheavals of Trump, Brexit and the return of the far right in Germany. We have heard many critiques of capitalism but no one has laid out a realistic way to fix it, until now. In a passionate and polemical book, celebrated economist Paul Collier outlines brilliantly original and ethical ways of healing these rifts - economic, social and cultural - with the cool head of pragmatism, rather than the fervour of ideological revivalism. He reveals how he has personally lived across these three divides, moving from working-class Sheffield to hyper-competitive Oxford, and working between Britain and Africa, and acknowledges some of the failings of his profession. Drawing on his own solutions as well as ideas from some of the world's most distinguished social scientists, he shows us how to save capitalism from itself - and free ourselves from the intellectual baggage of the 20th century. 'In this bold work of intellectual trespass, Paul Collier, a distinguished economist, ventures onto the terrain of ethics to explain what's gone wrong with capitalism, and how to fix it. To heal the divide between metropolitan elites and the left-behind, he argues, we need to rediscover an ethic of belonging, patriotism, and reciprocity. Offering inventive solutions to our current impasse, Collier shows how economics at its best is inseparable from moral and political philosophy' Michael Sandel, author of What Money Can't Buy and Justice 'The Future of Capitalism is the most revolutionary work of social science since Keynes. Let's hope it will also be the most influential. These times are in desperate need of Paul Collier's insights.' George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 2001 'For thirty years, the centre left of politics has been searching for a narrative that makes sense of the market economy. This book provides it' John Kay, Fellow of St John's College, Oxford and the author of Obliquity and Other People's Money"
Content: Biographisches: "Paul Collier is the Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the Oxford Blavatnik School of Government. He is the author of The Bottom Billion, which won the Lionel Gelber Prize and the Arthur Ross Prize awarded by the Council on Foreign Relations, The Future of Capitalism, The Plundered Planet, Exodus and Refuge (with Alexander Betts). Collier has served as Director of the Research Department of the World Bank, and consults with the German and many other governments around the world." Rezension(2): "Bill Gates, Summer Reading Recommendations 2019:These times are in desperate need of Paul Collier's insights. The Future of Capitalism restores common sense to our views of morality, as it also describes their critical role in what makes families, organizations, and nations work. It is the most revolutionary work of social science since Keynes. Let's hope it will also be the most influential" Rezension(3): "George Akerlof, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 2001:In this bold work of intellectual trespass, Paul Collier, a distinguished economist, ventures onto the terrain of ethics to explain what's gone wrong with capitalism, and how to fix it. Offering inventive solutions to our current impasse, Collier shows how economics at its best is inseparable from moral and political philosophy'" Rezension(4): "Michael Sandel, author of What Money Can't Buy and Justice:Collier has set for himself [the task] to re-establish the ethical character of social democracy. This is an important book for anyone concerned at the state of modern politics and our liberal democracies." Rezension(5): "Jon Cruddas MP:For thirty years, the centre left of politics has been searching for a narrative that makes sense of the market economy. This book provides it" Rezension(6): "John Kay, Fellow of St John's College, Oxford and the author of Obliquity and Other People's Money:I'm a big fan of Paul Collier. When I saw that The Future of Capitalism was about the polarization we're seeing in the U.S., Europe, and other places, I was eager to see what he had to say. I'm glad I did. The Future of Capitalism is an ambitious and thought-provoking book. . I think he is right more often than not. Ultimately, I agree with him that 'capitalism needs to be managed, not defeated.'" Rezension(7): "David Goodhart:This book is not an easy read but it is an important one - the revenge of the clever provincial biting the metropolitan hand that has fed him so generously." Rezension(8): "Martin Wolf, The Best Books of 2018:Collier is one of the UK's most distinguished economists. In this important book, he analyses what has gone wrong with contemporary capitalism, focusing on the growing divide between the educated and the less educated and between booming metropolis and the declining provinces. Rejecting the illusions of the ideologues and the populists, he puts forward pragmatic, provocative and perceptive ways to deliver widely shared prosperity, by restoring an ethical basis to our national politics, companies and families." Rezension(9): "Jesse Norman:For me the most gripping [2018 book on capitalism] was Paul Collier's The Future of Capitalism: a deep exploration of the ethical institutions underlying our market society 8212" Rezension(10): "Mervyn King, former Governor of the Bank of England:For well-to-do metropolitans, capitalism is the gift that goes on giving. For others, capitalism is not working. Paul Collier deploys passion, pragmatism and good economics in equal measure to chart an alternative to the divisions tearing apart so many western countries." Rezension(11): "〈a href=http://www.audiofilemagazine.com target=_blank〉〈img src=https://images.contentreserve.com/audiofile_logo.jpg alt=AudioFile Magazine border=0 /〉〈/a〉:This audiobook explores how the U.S. can address the ethical questions surrounding the inequalities that have created economic fissures in our society. It should come as no surprise to anyone living in a capitalist country that this economic system creates winners and losers. Narrator Peter Noble uses his English accent as a sword, slicing through the words in a sharp, ominous tone. He's terrific with his pronunciations and world accents, and he certainly knows how to pause for emphasis. The storm cloud he creates with his voice does become difficult to escape after a while. Most of this has to do with the author's words, but Noble could ease up on his tendency to be the doomsayer. R.I.G. AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine"
