Im 4. Band der "Arena Bibliothek des Wissens" stellt Novelli (zuletzt "Darwin und die wahre Geschichte der Dinosaurier", BA 9/05) den griechischen Mathematiker und Ingenieur Archimedes vor. In der Ich-Perspektive erzählt er von der Kindheit bis zur Ermordung das Leben des in Syrakus lebenden Griechen, der nicht nur die Kreiszahl Pi fand, sondern u.a. auch das Hebelgesetz und den Auftrieb, der Schiffe schwimmen lässt, entdeckte. Daneben konstruierte er zahlreiche Apparaturen, etwa die Förderschnecke, aber auch Wasserorgeln und Kriegsmaschinen. Novelli bettet die flüssig geschriebene Biografie in den historischen und geistesgeschichtlichen Hintergrund der Zeit ein, v.a. den Hellenismus und die Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Karthago und Rom. Durch den flotten Stil und die zahlreichen comicartigen Zeichnungen ist der Band unterhaltsam. Ein knapper Sachtext mit historischen Bildern fasst jedes Kapitel zusammen. Insgesamt ein ästhetisch ansprechender Band, der nicht nur historisch sondern auch naturwissenschaftlich Interessierte anspricht. Zur Anschaffung empfohlen. Für alle (Schul-)Bibliotheken
