Der einen Berichtszeitraum von zweieinhalb Jahren umfassende Band enthält 252 Briefe und Beilagen von und an Leibniz. Sie stammen aus gut drei Dutzend Korrespondenzen mit so renommierten Briefpartnern wie Joh.und Jac. Bernoulli, G. F. A. de L'Hospital, D. Papin, B. Ramazzini, E. W. von Tschirnhaus, J. Wallis, und E. Weigel. Zwei Briefwechsel (mit Joh. Bernoulli und D. Papin) stellen mehr als die Hälfte des Korrespondenzvolumens dieses Bandes dar. Die mathematischen Hauptthemen des Bandes sind das Brachistochronenproblem, d.h. die Frage nach der Bahn, auf der ein Körper im Schwerefeld in kürzester Zeit von einem Punkt zu einem anderen gelangt, und Jacob Bernoullis isoperimetrisches Problem. Übergeordnetes Thema dieser und weiterer Fragestellungen sind Extremalprobleme für Kurvenscharen. Weiterhin werden Geodäten, die Einwände Nieuwentijts und Clüvers gegen den Infinitesimalkalkül, die Natur des Unendlichkleinen und Prioritätsfragen diskutiert. Der intensive Streit zwischen den Leibniz'schen und Papin'schen Auffassungen über die Erhaltung der vis viva wird fortgesetzt. Ebenfalls im Streit mit Papin über die Grundsätze der Strömungsmechanik befindet sich Guglielmini, der seine "Epistola ... de aquarum fluentium mensura" an Leibniz adressiert. Technische Innovationen finden ihren Niederschlag in mehreren Briefwechseln, z.B. Pläne für eine Fontänenanlage in Herrenhausen (Du Mont), Hochofen und Glasherstellungsverfahren sowie ein Fahrzeug mit Dampfkraftantrieb (Papin). Neben einem Obduktionsbericht werden eine Reihe medizinischer und biologischer Themen in der Korrespondenz mit dem Leibarzt des dänischen Königs Franck von Franckenau erörtert. Zwei wichtige Korrespondenzen enden mit dem Tod des jeweiligen Briefpartners. In einem letzten Schreiben kurz vor J. D. Craffts Tod kündigt Leibniz die Zusammenarbeit, die seit 1671 bestanden hat, auf. Mit dem plötzlichen Tod von R. Ch. Bodenhausen im Mai 1698 verliert Leibniz ebenfalls einen langjährigen Weggefährten. Ab Juli 1697 ist R. Ch. Wagner für Leibniz tätig. Dies ist der Beginn einer der umfangreichsten Korrespondenzen von Leibniz.
