Ein junger Müllarbeiter in einem amerikanischen Provinznest erschießt den Vater seiner 15-jährigen Freundin, der gegen die Beziehung der beiden war, und flieht mit dem Mädchen. Nach weiteren Gewalttaten und nachdem ihn das Mädchen verlassen hat, ergibt er sich, stolz auf seinen Ruf als Killer, der Polizei. Spätwestern, der sich eindringlich mit Amerikas Gewalttrauma befasst, und zu diesem Zweck teilweise krasse inszenatorische Mittel nutzt, die jedoch keineswegs zum Selbstzweck geraten. Einer der frühen Filme, die sich mit den Vietnam-Trauma der USA befassen; zugleich stellt er die Frage, ob der Krieg in Südostasien wirklich die Ursache für den vielbeschworenen "Verlust der Unschuld einer ganzen Nation" ist. - Sehenswert.
